ليس إذا ما ابتلى الله الإنسان فأكرمه ونعمه يكون ذلك إكرامًا مطلقًا وليس إذا ما قدر عليه رزقه يكون ذلك إهانة بل هو ابتلاء في الموضعين، وهو الاختبار والامتحان.
فإن شكر الله على الرخاء وصبر على الشدة= كان كل واحد من الحالين خيرا له، وإن لم يشكر ولم يصبر= كان كل واحد من الحالين شرا له.
ثم تلك السراء التي هي من ثواب طاعته إذا عصي الله فيها= كانت سببا لعذابه. والمكاره التي هي عقوبة معصيته إذا أطاع الله فيها= كانت سببا لسعادته.
فتدبر هذا؛ لتعلم أن الأعمال بخواتيمها، وأن ما ظاهره نعمة هو لذة عاجلة: قد تكون سببًا للعذاب، وما ظاهره عذاب وهو ألم عاجل: قد يكون سببًا للنعيم، وما هو طاعه فيما يرى الناس: قد يكون سببًا لهلاك العبد برجوعه عن الطاعة إذا ابتلي في هذه الطاعة، وما هو معصية فيما يرى الناس: قد يكون سببًا لسعادة العبد بتوبته منه وتصبره على المصيبة التي هي عقوبة ذلك الذنب.
