“Merry Xmas and a happy New Thor!” said a 1950 ad that promoted the world’s first hybrid washing machine called Automagic, which was available from Thor, an American manufacturer of household appliances whose name implied that its products were a godsend. The Automagic was a hybrid because it could function as an automatic washing machine and a dishwasher. The dishwashing mode required the use of a designated rack, which was installed into the tub, and was activated at the turn of a switch (one only had to be careful not to select “Spin-Dry”). The Automagic was released in the 1940s and discontinued in the 1950s – even though the manufacturer claimed that none of the parts that touched clothes touched dishes, some people simply could not stand the idea of washing clothes and dishes in the same tub.

Interestingly, some of you may have seen a similar contraption in Soviet households. It was available from Kharkov Electromechanical Works as Kharkov – KhEMZ and was almost an exact replica of the American one.

The news also helped traders look past another report showing decades-high inflation and shake off some of the volatility from recent sessions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' February Consumer Price Index (CPI) this week showed another surge in prices even before Russia escalated its attacks in Ukraine. The headline CPI — soaring 7.9% over last year — underscored the sticky inflationary pressures reverberating across the U.S. economy, with everything from groceries to rents and airline fares getting more expensive for everyday consumers. "Markets were cheering this economic recovery and return to strong economic growth, but the cheers will turn to tears if the inflation outbreak pushes businesses and consumers to the brink of recession," he added. At its heart, Telegram is little more than a messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal. But it also offers open channels that enable a single user, or a group of users, to communicate with large numbers in a method similar to a Twitter account. This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for Telegram and its users, since these channels can be used for both good and ill. Right now, as Wired reports, the app is a key way for Ukrainians to receive updates from the government during the invasion. That hurt tech stocks. For the past few weeks, the 10-year yield has traded between 1.72% and 2%, as traders moved into the bond for safety when Russia headlines were ugly—and out of it when headlines improved. Now, the yield is touching its pandemic-era high. If the yield breaks above that level, that could signal that it’s on a sustainable path higher. Higher long-dated bond yields make future profits less valuable—and many tech companies are valued on the basis of profits forecast for many years in the future. Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Kyiv-based lawyer and head of the Center for Civil Liberties, called Durov’s position "very weak," and urged concrete improvements.
