Федор Васильевич добровольцем ушел на войну, служил в пехоте, артиллерии, был разведчиком. Получил три ранения, награжден боевыми орденами и медалями.
Главная тема в творчестве Савостьянова — суровые фронтовые будни. Герои его сюжетов делят последнюю краюху хлеба, читают стихи, спасают детей и помогают раненым. В выставку вошла одна из главных работ художника — картина «Во имя жизни. Разведчики».
Послевоенные полотна отражают красоту родной природы, беззаботную жизнь детей, труд рабочих. Среди таких картин — «У родника», «Рыбалка», «Каникулы».
