Long night ahead for them, but mostly for Merz and the CDU.

Merz ran his campaign on aggressive anti-SPD rhetoric and statements. His party got very close to the AfD on that one anti-immigration text that the SPD denounced. Politically, he's more right-wing than center-right.

Now imagine having to add Greens or FDP in that cesspool of an alliance.

Merz would have to pander to the SPD to not see his coalition broken down, which would further hemorrage his party towards the AfD.

TL;DR : Merz needs to lock in.
