Деякі з них дійсно були буквально забороненими владою і доступ до них обмежувався (вилучення з бібліотек, урізання тиражів, відсутність підтримки з боку видавництв тощо).

Також це тексти, які не видавалися одразу після написання через страх критики чи гоніння, але виходили у світ через десятки років (іноді й після смерті автора/авторки). Деякі книжки навіть не заборонялися прямо, проте мали контраверсійну репутацію через висвітлення суперечливих тем.
