Last Update:
• Despite the cautious position of Brazilian diplomacy with the expansion of the Brics -- a group formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa --, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that he defends the integration of new countries, within the criteria which will be defined at the summit at the end of this month.
• Brazilian diplomacy, as Reuters showed, is reticent in relation to the expansion. There is a fear of losing relative space in the bloc and that the Brics will end up being used as a force against the G7, which is not a traditional position of Brazil, more conciliatory.
• Sources heard by Reuters admit, however, that it is a minority position (within Brazilian diplomacy) and that Brazil will negotiate, as is its tradition, to try criteria that take into account the Brazilian concern. Among them, the defense of global governance reform and regional parity criteria.
• In defending the expansion, Lula said he wanted a strong bloc, with a strong bank, that could "help the countries".
• Noteworthy that Brazil also participated in the last G7 meeting, in Japan, as a guest country, and is a member of the G20, a group in which discussions have been prioritized, as well as in the Brics.
