Юкими вовсе не культурологический миф. В 19 веке в Японии появился целый «Атлас снежинок» или Сэкка Дзусэцу (сэкка буквально «снежный цветок). Составил его счастливый обладатель микроскопа, купленного у голландцев, Тосицура Дои, даймё/феодал в Кога (ныне преф. Ибараки). На протяжении 20 лет он наблюдал за снежинками и зарисовывал их, а в 1832 году вышла первая часть Атласа (86 иллюстраций), в 1840 году - вторая, еще 97. Кроме того, Тосицура описал 14 полезных свойств снега. Считается, что именно это издание сделало снежинки популярным мотивом бытовой культуры в эпоху Эдо - он появляется в орнаментах кимоно, в росписи на посуде и инкрустации шкатулок инро и пр.
