По закону генетическую информацию в обязательном порядке собирали только у преступников и подозреваемых в тяжких и особо тяжких преступлениях, а также у близких родственников лица, пропавшего без вести, в ходе его розыска. С 2023 года — у всех осуждённых и арестованных. Отбор генетической информации у людей, не совершивших преступлений, может быть только добровольным.
