По предварительным данным, изначально состав формировался на станции Дно в Псковской области. После этого поезд прибыл на станцию Сонково в Тверской области, а оттуда был отправлен в Ярославль. Сейчас сотрудники спецслужб выясняют, где и когда могло быть заложено взрывное устройство.
Взрывчатка на поезде была обнаружена на одной из цистерн грузового состава утром 5 октября. СВУ было закреплено на одной из пустых цистерн.
После того, как взрывчатка была обнаружена, её уничтожили с помощью гидроразрушителя.
