Коли птах сидить, то дихання відбувається за рахунок розширення та звуження грудної клітки. Під час польоту грудина нерухома і вдих/видих відбуваються за рахунок змахів крил.
Крила піднімаються — повітряні мішки розтягуються, повітря з легенів йде до передніх мішків, а легені і задні мішки наповнює свіже повітря.
Крила опускаються — повітря з передніх мішків йде назовні, а легені наповнює все ще свіже повітря (газообмін у мішках не відбувається) з задніх мішків. Отже, подвійний подих відбувається саме у польоті!
Завдяки такій унікальний системі дихання птах видобуває з 1 л повітря 40 одиниць кисню (ссавці — 30 одиниць).
