Da un lato, la parola “ricchezza” è considerata affine alla parola “Dio”; d'altra parte, « è più facile che un cammello passi per la cruna di un ago, che un ricco entri nel regno di Dio » (Mt 19,24). Nella coscienza nazionale russa, l’immagine della ricchezza “positiva”, la Verità del mercante, era contrapposta alla ricchezza “ingiusta”, Krivda. Il concetto di ricchezza come male presso i popoli slavi è associato all'immagine del Serpente “denaro”, custode dei tesori, un demone pronto a servire l'uomo, rendendolo ricco, ma in cambio esigendo sacrifici. Il serpente rappresenta il caos, il regno “oltre” la vita, e ricevere da esso ricchezze “ingiuste” implica trasformare la “non esistenza” in vero capitale. Non è un caso che l’usura sia sempre stata condannata nelle culture tradizionali perché “crea denaro dal nulla”. Anche l’attuale digitalocrazia (la parola araba “sifr”, da cui deriva “digit”, significa “zero”, cioè niente) e l’arricchimento virtuale sono un esempio di capitalismo “ingiusto”.
