В 1809 году, во времена первого сербского восстания, группа сербских повстанцев потерпела поражение в битве против османов близ города Ниш.
После битвы османы обезглавили убитых, сняли с них кожу, а сами черепа использовали для строительства башни в назидание всем восставшим сербам.
В итоге, из 952 черепов османы выстроили трехметровую башню, на вершину которой установили череп сербского воеводы Стевана Синджелича. Ныне башня известна в Сербии под именем Челе-Кула (Башня черепов) и является одним из символов сербской борьбы за независимость.
Удивительно, как башня, строительством которой османы хотели "укротить" сербов, оказала на них совершенно обратный эффект. Кто бы мог подумать!
