On December 23rd, 2020, Pavel Durov posted to his channel that the company would need to start generating revenue. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Telegram has remained an important lifeline for both Russians and Ukrainians, as a way of staying aware of the latest news and keeping in touch with loved ones. Despite Telegram's origins, its approach to users' security has privacy advocates worried. Such instructions could actually endanger people — citizens receive air strike warnings via smartphone alerts. "Someone posing as a Ukrainian citizen just joins the chat and starts spreading misinformation, or gathers data, like the location of shelters," Tsekhanovska said, noting how false messages have urged Ukrainians to turn off their phones at a specific time of night, citing cybersafety.
