На острове находится 25% запасов всех ключевых редкоземельных элементов в мире. Кроме этого, там разведаны запасы оксида урана, которые оцениваются в 270 тыс тонн. Имеются существенные залежи и других полезных ископаемых - цинка, свинца, железной руды, угля, молибдена, золота и платины.
Отметим, что в свой первый президентский срок Дональд Трамп неоднократно пытался купить остров у Дании, однако сделка так и не состоялась.
