Перспективные одноэтажные поезда c двумя головными вагонами могут быть запущены на линии, связывающей южные районы Чикаго с пригородом. Как заявляет Metra, это позволит вывести из эксплуатации тепловозы с истекающим сроком эксплуатации, а также пассажирские вагоны локомотивной тяги.
Ранее компания планировала провести модернизацию под аккумуляторную тягу 6 тепловозов. Однако выбранный ей исполнитель – Progress Rail – отказался от выполнения данного заказа.
Сейчас двухвагонный аккумуляторный поезд на базе гибридного FLIRT Akku для США разрабатывает швейцарская Stadler.
