Stocks closed in the red Friday as investors weighed upbeat remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin about diplomatic discussions with Ukraine against a weaker-than-expected print on U.S. consumer sentiment. You may recall that, back when Facebook started changing WhatsAppโ€™s terms of service, a number of news outlets reported on, and even recommended, switching to Telegram. Pavel Durov even said that users should delete WhatsApp โ€œunless you are cool with all of your photos and messages becoming public one day.โ€ But Telegram canโ€™t be described as a more-secure version of WhatsApp. The company maintains that it cannot act against individual or group chats, which are โ€œprivate amongst their participants,โ€ but it will respond to requests in relation to sticker sets, channels and bots which are publicly available. During the invasion of Ukraine, Pavel Durov has wrestled with this issue a lot more prominently than he has before. Channels like Donbass Insider and Bellum Acta, as reported by Foreign Policy, started pumping out pro-Russian propaganda as the invasion began. So much so that the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council issued a statement labeling which accounts are Russian-backed. Ukrainian officials, in potential violation of the Geneva Convention, have shared imagery of dead and captured Russian soldiers on the platform. Markets continued to grapple with the economic and corporate earnings implications relating to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. โ€œWe have a ton of uncertainty right now,โ€ said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist and portfolio manager at Hightower Advisors. โ€œWeโ€™re dealing with a war, weโ€™re dealing with inflation. We donโ€™t know what it means to earnings.โ€ The news also helped traders look past another report showing decades-high inflation and shake off some of the volatility from recent sessions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' February Consumer Price Index (CPI) this week showed another surge in prices even before Russia escalated its attacks in Ukraine. The headline CPI โ€” soaring 7.9% over last year โ€” underscored the sticky inflationary pressures reverberating across the U.S. economy, with everything from groceries to rents and airline fares getting more expensive for everyday consumers.
