К началу 70-х годов к руководству США пришло понимание, что полёты на Луну по программе Аполлон свою главную миссию, провозглашенную президентом Кеннеди, выполнили. Финансирование НАСА было сокращено, полёты «Аполлон-18, -19, -20» отменены, программа свернута.

Однако, в распоряжении ведомства оставались 3 готовые сверхтяжелые ракеты «Сатурн-5». В НАСА решили вернуться к давней идее: создание на базе одной из ступеней ракеты орбитальной станции.

Окончательный вариант орбитальной станции, созданной на основе 3-й ступени РН «Сатурн-5» (фото 3), получил название «Skylab».

Станция была выведена на орбиту 14 мая 1973 года (фот 1, 2). Впоследствии на станции работали 3 экипажа, доставлявшиеся на станцию кораблями «Аполлон».

Своё существование станция прекратила 11 июля 1979 года… частичным падением несгоревших частей в западной Австралии.

He did, however, walk back this plan when it became clear that they had also become a vital communications tool for Ukrainian officials and citizens to help coordinate their resistance and evacuations.
