Він був талановитим полководцем і провів багато успішних військових операцій, зокрема визволення Криму від російських військ у квітні 1918 року. Його підрозділ вважався одним із найбоєздатніших в українській армії.
Болбочан критикував діяльність уряду УНР за некомпетентність і загравання з більшовиками. За свою принципову позицію він був звинувачений у державній зраді і розстріляний 28 червня 1919 року. Його спадщина продовжує надихати сучасні покоління українців у їхній боротьбі за свободу та незалежність.
