وإني لآسى على علمه المفرق في الكتب، فتجد مسألة في شرحه لشعر أبي تمام، وأخرى في "عبث الوليد" شرحه على شعر البحتري، وأُخَر يأتي بها مستطردا في رسائله كالصاهل والشاحج، والفصول والغايات. حتى رأيت هذا البحث النافع، الذي تم نفعه بفهارس للمسائل التي تكلم فيها أبو العلاء ومواضعها في كتبه المطبوعة، فكان فيه مَقنَع.
وحُقَّ لمثله أن تُلَزَّ أقواله بأقوال غيره من الصرفيين والعروضيين، وممن هو أولى بالتقدمة عليهم، ممن لا يخلو منهم كتاب.
