Так, оскільки одні з перших фінансових операцій проводилися ще в Стародавній Греції, то одразу уявляються площа, ринок, юрба та стіл, на якому брязкають різні монети. І не дарма, адже й сучасною грецькою мовою банк – трапеза (τράπεζα < τετράπεζα, #буквально "чотиринога"), тобто "стіл".
Далі уявляється вже середньовічна Італія, торгові Венеція, Флоренція, Ґенуя; промітні сміливці, що на лавах (banco) міняють гроші та всіляко лихварять нашвидкоруч. До котрогось врешті приходять чи то представники церкви, чи то ошукані клієнти і ламають лавку (banca rotta). Інші ж багатіють, лави обростають конторами, а згодом і банками, приміщення яких і досі не обходяться без лав та столів.
Так і в нас лавки та прилавки стали обов'язковими атрибутами торгівлі.
Звісно, в такому ж дусі можна стверджувати, що стіл – ще й батько бюрократії та політики: див. бюро та пор. ланцюг стіл > престол (поч. "найвища лава") > столиця.
