Храм в стиле московского барокко воздвигли на деньги местных богачей семьи Поповых в 1748. До этого здесь стоял древний и ветхий деревянный храм. Церковь, единственная в Серпухове, избежала разорения в советские годы. Здесь даже сохранился иконостас, сделанный из бронзы в 1902 году.
Особенность архитектуры Ильинской церкви заключается в сочетании традиционной для посадских церквей XVII века компоновки основных объемов с ярусной композицией, отличающей приемы зодчества эпохи Петра I.
У храма при царе возникали сложности с бухгалтерией (да-да, такое бывает). В 1831 за неимением средств на содержание и обновление здания, храм закрыли для посещения.
Церковь передавали во владение разным, более успешным, серпуховским приходам, но отремонтировать ее смогли только в 1844-1847 уже на деньги купцов Плотниковых, для которых это был вопрос чести – купцы были потомственными прихожанами.
Гуляя мимо церкви, и увидев стоящий в ее дворе «Гелик», стало понятно – храм в надежных руках новых русских прихожан и очередное разорение ей не грозит.
