Это один из древнейших христианских памятников России, построенный в XI веке в Северной Осетии, в Зругском ущелье. На стенах Храма сохранились остатки фресок XII века.

Построен в XI веке в период расцвета христианства в Алании, служил частью Никозской епархии Грузинской Православной Церкви. В XIII-XIV веках пострадал от монголо-татарского нашествия.

В XX веке признан памятником федерального значения, сейчас включен в программу по сохранению культурного наследия.

В 2002 году храм пострадал от наводнения и требует реставрации.
