It’s quite hot these days in St. Petersburg and we’re thus continuing with our summer tradition of sharing outdoor chaises with you. Today’s issue of Sunday Postmodernism features two remarkable pieces designed by Maarten van Severen, an outstanding Belgian architect. Having studied architecture at the Royal School of Fine Arts in Ghent, van Severen soon decided to switch to furniture designs and, starting from 1986, produced quite a number of domestic furnishings, often working alongside Rem Koolhaas as an interior designer, guided by his belief that ‘Furniture is what makes the space liveable’.

LIke many other furniture designs by van Severen, the MVS chaise created in 2000 for Vitra showcases the architect’s knowledge of the staples of modernism. We simply cannot unsee the outlines of the legendary chaises by Charlotte Perriand. Unlike the LC4 lounger, the MVS enables the seater to stay in touch with the ground or float above it simply by shifting his/her weight.

Since January 2022, the SC has received a total of 47 complaints and enquiries on illegal investment schemes promoted through Telegram. These fraudulent schemes offer non-existent investment opportunities, promising very attractive and risk-free returns within a short span of time. They commonly offer unrealistic returns of as high as 1,000% within 24 hours or even within a few hours. Founder Pavel Durov says tech is meant to set you free At the start of 2018, the company attempted to launch an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) which would enable it to enable payments (and earn the cash that comes from doing so). The initial signals were promising, especially given Telegram’s user base is already fairly crypto-savvy. It raised an initial tranche of cash – worth more than a billion dollars – to help develop the coin before opening sales to the public. Unfortunately, third-party sales of coins bought in those initial fundraising rounds raised the ire of the SEC, which brought the hammer down on the whole operation. In 2020, officials ordered Telegram to pay a fine of $18.5 million and hand back much of the cash that it had raised. Perpetrators of these scams will create a public group on Telegram to promote these investment packages that are usually accompanied by fake testimonies and sometimes advertised as being Shariah-compliant. Interested investors will be asked to directly message the representatives to begin investing in the various investment packages offered. Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has grown from a simple messaging app to a broadcast network. Its user base isn’t as vast as WhatsApp’s, and its broadcast platform is a fraction the size of Twitter, but it’s nonetheless showing its use. While Telegram has been embroiled in controversy for much of its life, it has become a vital source of communication during the invasion of Ukraine. But, if all of this is new to you, let us explain, dear friends, what on Earth a Telegram is meant to be, and why you should, or should not, need to care.
