The opening picture shows two prominent Danish architects who were also exact contemporaries and partners, Flemming Lassen (the one in an MR chair designed by Mies van der Rohe, Lassen’s look-up-to) and Arne Jacobsen (the one in the wicker chaise of his own design). The wicker chair was created in 1929 as Jacobsen was exploring the use of rattan for furniture-making as a lighter alternative to wood traditionally used by Danish cabinetmakers. The chair was submitted for a competition organized by the Danish Basket Weavers’ Association the same year. Unlike the earlier examples of this lounger that featured dense wickerwork, later pieces were made of spaced-out bamboo strips and had a lace-like appearance.

Because of an erroneous belief that this chaise was displayed at the 1925 Paris Exhibition and even earned Jacobsen a silver medal (the architect was indeed awarded a silver medal, but for a different chair design), the chair is now known and commercially available as the Paris Chair. Since it’s Friday today and time for our traditional quiz, we’re inviting anyone willing to guess the original nickname of this design without googling.

If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means it’s less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isn’t as secure earned it some criticism. If you’re looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFF’s preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. At this point, however, Durov had already been working on Telegram with his brother, and further planned a mobile-first social network with an explicit focus on anti-censorship. Later in April, he told TechCrunch that he had left Russia and had “no plans to go back,” saying that the nation was currently “incompatible with internet business at the moment.” He added later that he was looking for a country that matched his libertarian ideals to base his next startup. READ MORE Given the pro-privacy stance of the platform, it’s taken as a given that it’ll be used for a number of reasons, not all of them good. And Telegram has been attached to a fair few scandals related to terrorism, sexual exploitation and crime. Back in 2015, Vox described Telegram as “ISIS’ app of choice,” saying that the platform’s real use is the ability to use channels to distribute material to large groups at once. Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. But because group chats and the channel features are not end-to-end encrypted, Galperin said user privacy is potentially under threat.
