Свою карьеру в области культуры Елена Яковлевна начала экскурсоводом в Эрмитаже. Затем она продолжила научную работу в ГМЗ «Гатчина», а в 1990 году возглавила Михайловский замок. Но главное место в ее жизни занял Петродворец.
За 13 лет под ее руководством в Петергофе провели масштабную реставрацию фонтанов, Екатерининского корпуса, дворца-коттеджа, Готической капеллы и других достопримечательностей музея-заповедника.
