С приходом на Русь христианства пришли и христианские имена, в том числе греческого происхождения (или прошедшие греческую адаптацию). Они содержали звуки, аналоги которых в древнерусском языке того времени отсутствовали. Одним из таких звуков был [ф], который и сейчас не присутствует в исконных словах, за исключением звукоподражательных. Новым этот звук был и для вепсского с карельским языком
В русских народных вариантах имен звук [ф] мог передаваться как [х], как [п] или [в]:
Анфим > Анхим, откуда д. Анхимово (Вытегорский погост), саминская и гакугская фамилия Анхимков, замошская фамилия Анхимов
Фотий > Хотей, Филипп > Хилка, Иосиф > Есип / Осип, Стефан > Cтепан, Матфей > Матвей
