Она родилась в Тереке и там же окончила школу. Очень любила точные науки и обладала способностями к иностранным языкам. После школы - Саратовская консерватория. Ее возвращение домой после учебы совпало с реорганизацией республиканского ансамбля песни и пляски. Его стали называть «Кабардинка». Вокалистке предложили работать там.
Позднее, будучи солисткой филармонии, побывала более чем в 50 странах мира. Объездила с сольными концертами всю страну. Наталия Гасташева стала лауреатом премии Ленинского комсомола, заслуженной артисткой Кабардино-Балкарии и лауреатом Государственной премии республики, а в 1980 году ей присвоили звание народной артистки России.
С начала 90-х Гасташева преподаёт в Северо-Кавказском институте искусств. Ученики отзываются о ней с большой симпатией и уважением. Для многих из них она стала не только педагогом, но и по-настоящему родным человеком.
