1942 г. Приказом НКО № 0033 Разведуправление РККА преобразовано в ГРУ (генерал-майор танковых войск А.П. Панфилов) 23.09.1942 г. приказом НКО № 00222 ГРУ выделено из состава Генерального штаба и подчинено НКО. В июне 1945 г. ГРУ опять вошло в состав Генерального штаба.
