В общем определяется способностью реагировать на происходящее вокруг, возможность активной(!) умственной и физической деятельности. Отличается от состояния сна и состояний утраты (выключения) сознания. Состояние бодрствования обеспечивается оптимальной функциональной активностью(!) всего мозга.
