In less than a decade, the US Air Force dropped over 2 million tons of ordnance on the Southeast Asian country of Laos, making it the most heavily bombed country in history. It was on this day, 60 years ago, that the US launched Operation Barrel Roll.

By the time Operation Barrel Roll ended on March 29, 1973, the US had dropped 260 million bombs on Laos, more than all of the bombs dropped during WWII combined.

The US Air Force conducted 580,344 bombing missions in Laos and dropped the equivalent of eight bombs a minute, equivalent to 2 million tons of ordinance. Read on to learn more about the CIA’s “Secret War in Laos.”

Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?

He said that since his platform does not have the capacity to check all channels, it may restrict some in Russia and Ukraine "for the duration of the conflict," but then reversed course hours later after many users complained that Telegram was an important source of information. "Like the bombing of the maternity ward in Mariupol," he said, "Even before it hits the news, you see the videos on the Telegram channels." One thing that Telegram now offers to all users is the ability to “disappear” messages or set remote deletion deadlines. That enables users to have much more control over how long people can access what you’re sending them. Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals. Groups are also not fully encrypted, end-to-end. This includes private groups. Private groups cannot be seen by other Telegram users, but Telegram itself can see the groups and all of the communications that you have in them. All of the same risks and warnings about channels can be applied to groups. Just days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Durov wrote that Telegram was "increasingly becoming a source of unverified information," and he worried about the app being used to "incite ethnic hatred."
