В этот день спускаемый аппарат советской автоматической межпланетной станции «Марс-3» совершил первую в мире мягкую посадку на поверхность планеты Марс. Сбылась давняя мечта человечества — достичь Красной планеты.
Советским учёным удалось доказать: мягкая посадка на Марс реальна.
На борту спускаемого аппарата был закреплён вымпел с изображением Государственного герба СССР. В состав автоматической марсианской станции входил марсоход ПрОП-М. Посадочный модуль миссии «Марс-3» является первой автоматической марсианской станцией.
Об этом свершении был снят документальный фильм «Советский штурм Марса».
