Сначала здание на Воробьёвых горах выделили под гостиницу и жильё. 15 марта 1948 года вышло постановление Совета министров о том, что здание на Ленинских, как их тогда называли, горах будет отдано под Московский государственный университет им. М.В. Ломоносова. Тогда под руководством Льва Руднева совместно с коллективом архитекторов началось строительство одного из самых ярких образцов сталинской архитектуры.
Высотка строилась достаточно долго — это был очень мощный и сложный строительный проект. 1 сентября 1953-го, к началу очередного учебного года, здание торжественно открыли.
