30 декабря 1972 года открыта «Монументальная композиция, посвящённая 50-летию создания СССР» у Дома быта.
Автор: архитектор А.И. Выпов.
Работы по возведению памятника начались 1 сентября 1972 года. Именно тогда бригада Александра Архипова из управления Фундаментстрой домостроительного комбината закончила забивку свай под фундамент обелиска.
Монумент посвящён 50-летию Советского Союза, который был образован 30 декабря 1922 года и просуществовал по декабрь 1991 года.
Интересный факт: по замыслу архитектора А.И. Выпова первоначально монумент был без гербов союзных республик на лепестках.
