6 января 1978 года открыто движение троллейбуса по маршруту «Проспект Октябрьский – Вокзал» протяжённостью около 8 километров. Этот день считается днём рождения троллейбуса в Новокузнецке.
В ходе строительства первой троллейбусной линии было установлено 363 железобетонные и металлические опоры и протянуто более 19 километров контактного провода.
24 декабря 1977 года по проспектам Октябрьский и Бардина были пущены два первых пробных троллейбуса.
В настоящее время троллейбусная сеть охватывает левобережную часть города и Заводской район. Планируется пуск троллейбуса в Новоильинском районе.
