The Calm Before the Storm

In late September I went on a mom's retreat with our kids to the NC mountains. It was absolutely beautiful! The reference pictures used in this piece, were from photos I took with my phone while we were there. We were there for 3 nights and on the third day, the storm rolled in. On the third night, we all had to go to the basement because of a tornado warning in the area due to tropical storm Helene. We even debated on whether we should stay because of the roads flooding. We decided to leave as soon as the sun came up on our original checkout day. It turns out that if we had stayed any later than we did, we would've been stuck at our air bnb on a mountain with no food, water, no way out, and no way to call for help. We were very lucky, but it was definitely scary and my heart breaks for the people who weren't so lucky. 💔

This trip and our narrow escape from Helene was the partial inspiration for this piece but not the only one. When we got back, one of my dear friends lost her husband suddenly just days after returning home and this was a week before the year anniversary of the death of my fiancé. It was a really hard time all around. When thinking about our trip and how delicate our lives can be, the title of this piece came to me.

Ultimately "The Calm Before the Storm" is about the comfort we have before a major life change and how sometimes that comfort can feel concrete, like it will always be there. Nature often reminds us that isn't the case. The good thing about this is that although our comfort and our joy can't last forever, neither can our pain and sorrow.

The moth being the focal point of this piece represents just how beautiful, yet fragile and temporary life can be. It's important to appreciate the beauty of life and the experience of love when we can find it... and to show loved ones how important they are while they are here, instead of waiting until they're gone. This is something that can be all too easy to forget when caught up in the comfort of habitual daily routines. Thank you all for reading and for the support I've gotten with my art so far. It really means so much. ❤️🔥

Official government accounts have also spread fake fact checks. An official Twitter account for the Russia diplomatic mission in Geneva shared a fake debunking video claiming without evidence that "Western and Ukrainian media are creating thousands of fake news on Russia every day." The video, which has amassed almost 30,000 views, offered a "how-to" spot misinformation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces "destroy the invaders wherever we can." Given the pro-privacy stance of the platform, it’s taken as a given that it’ll be used for a number of reasons, not all of them good. And Telegram has been attached to a fair few scandals related to terrorism, sexual exploitation and crime. Back in 2015, Vox described Telegram as “ISIS’ app of choice,” saying that the platform’s real use is the ability to use channels to distribute material to large groups at once. Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. To that end, when files are actively downloading, a new icon now appears in the Search bar that users can tap to view and manage downloads, pause and resume all downloads or just individual items, and select one to increase its priority or view it in a chat.
