The Free Ukrainian Republic / Maxym Kryvonis Battalion is a military unit composed primarily of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) who were captured by Russian forces. The unit began forming in autumn 2023 and became publicly known in spring 2024.
The battalion’s stated goal, according to interviews with its members on, is to overthrow Ukraine’s current government and create a Ukraine friendly to Russia. Some of its fighters are former Ukrainian soldiers, including a man from Lviv and an ex-member of the Azov Regiment.
The battalion is named after Maxym Kryvonis, a 17th-century Cossack colonel and ally of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who led a rebellion against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Kryvonis is historically associated with the moment when the Zaporizhian Cossacks pledged allegiance to the Russian Tsar.
The battalion is led by Viacheslav “Batya Kharkivsky” Hubin, a native of Kharkiv and former city council deputy who sided with Russia after the 2014 Euromaidan events.
