كشفت دراسة غربية كغيرها من دراسات عديدة عن زيادة معدلات انتحار النساء وبعد تطور حركة استقلال المرأة النسوية (1970-1985)، بالتزامن مع التقدم نحو استقلال المرأة وجد الباحثون أن هناك ارتفاع كبير في انتحار الإناث وانخفاض في نسبة انتحار الذكور .
و أعلى المعدلات للانتحار بين النساء العاملات اللائي يعشن في المناطق الحضرية.
وتبين أن النساء الغربيات يهربن من واقعهن المؤلم بإدمان الكحول حيث وجد ارتباط كبير بين الوفيات الناجمة عن الانتحار وتليف الكبد.
كما تبين للباحثون أن إدمان الكحول غالبا ما يؤدي إلى الانتحار عند النساء العاملات بعد وصولهن لليئس .
وتنبأ الباحثون في الدراسة إلى أنه سيؤدي استقلال المرأة إلى زيادة معدلات إدمان الكحول ، وتدهو صحة النساء .
ويعزى السبب الرئيسي إلى أخذهن أدوار إضافية في حياتهن ( بيت، اولاد، زوج، عمل ...) وهذا من شأنه زيادة الضغط عليهن و جعلهن يعشن في صراع مستمر ..
