Сегодня, 2 февраля 1784 года, в соответствии с приказом Екатерины II, была образована Таврическая область на территории бывшего Крымского ханства.
Первоначально её административным центром стал город Карасубазар, однако в том же году столица была перенесена в Симферополь. По тому же указу, область была поделена на семь уездов:
- Днепровский: центр — Алёшки - Евпаторийский: центр — Евпатория - Левкопольский: центр — Левкополь - Мелитопольский: центр — Мелитополь - Перекопский: центр — Перекоп - Симферопольский: центр — Симферополь - Фанагорийский (Тмутараканский) уезд
На более низком уровне административного деления, согласно указаниям князя Потёмкина в 1786 и 1787 годах, сохранились камаканства, управлявшиеся крымско-татарскими каймаками.
