Григорий Чухрай и Валентин Ежов прошли войну и быстро нашли общий язык. Они решили снять фильм-рассказ об обычном солдате, который не совершал подвигов, но сделал многое для Победы. Сценарий к фильму фронтовики создавали вместе: каждый из них записывал свое видение эпизодов, а потом отдавал другому для правок.

Хотя «Балладу о солдате» сначала выпустили в ограниченном прокате, зрительский успех был настолько ошеломляющий, что фильм начали показывать повсеместно. В СССР ленту посмотрели больше 30 миллионов человек! Фильм и его создатели стали обладателями более 100 международных премий, в том числе и двух специальных призов жюри Каннского фестиваля.
