Каменный храм воздвигнут на месте древней деревянной церкви, которую построил князь Василий II, внук Дмитрия Донского и прадед Иоанна Грозного.

Церковь получила народное название «Красная», то есть красивая. Это название употреблялось в официальных документах вплоть до конца XVIII века.

Каменный храм строился с 1668 по 1679 год.

Здесь крестили Петра Первого.
