I'll never forgive the Saudis for defacing the Sacred Mosque and the Holy Kaaba in Mecca with this grotesque clock tower and the obnoxiously luxurious hotels and resorts surrounding it.

Mecca is supposed to be a place where a person turns his full attention to his Lord, where one lets go of all things worldly, where one bows humbly in prayer at his Majesty. It's not a place for 5 star hotels, Michelin-star dinners, spa resorts and designer clothing stores.

After fleeing Russia, the brothers founded Telegram as a way to communicate outside the Kremlin's orbit. They now run it from Dubai, and Pavel Durov says it has more than 500 million monthly active users. Telegram boasts 500 million users, who share information individually and in groups in relative security. But Telegram's use as a one-way broadcast channel — which followers can join but not reply to — means content from inauthentic accounts can easily reach large, captive and eager audiences. Telegram users are able to send files of any type up to 2GB each and access them from any device, with no limit on cloud storage, which has made downloading files more popular on the platform. Individual messages can be fully encrypted. But the user has to turn on that function. It's not automatic, as it is on Signal and WhatsApp. One thing that Telegram now offers to all users is the ability to “disappear” messages or set remote deletion deadlines. That enables users to have much more control over how long people can access what you’re sending them. Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals.
