Азаров стал врио губернатора Самарской области в сентябре 2017 года. Через год он победил на досрочных выборах главы региона. 10 сентября 2023 года тоже одержал победу. С 21 декабря 2020 Азаров является членом президиума Государственного Совета Российской Федерации.
