The rebels: We captured the Captagon factories of Maher al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad's brother

With the fall of the regime, the rebels managed to get their hands on one of the most lucrative industries of the Assad family: exporting drugs all over the Middle East.

Maher al-Assad, who commanded the fourth division of the Syrian army, reached every point he saw relevant to smuggle drugs through to Jordan, Saudi Arabia and more.
Captagon is part of Hezbollah's revenue system and it can be assumed that there was significant cooperation between Maher al-Assad and Hezbollah in this area.

According to estimates in Syria, Maher al-Assad made about five billion dollars a year from the drug production and distribution industry.

Apparently upbeat developments in Russia's discussions with Ukraine helped at least temporarily send investors back into risk assets. Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that there were "certain positive developments" occurring in the talks with Ukraine, according to a transcript of their meeting. Putin added that discussions were happening "almost on a daily basis." At this point, however, Durov had already been working on Telegram with his brother, and further planned a mobile-first social network with an explicit focus on anti-censorship. Later in April, he told TechCrunch that he had left Russia and had “no plans to go back,” saying that the nation was currently “incompatible with internet business at the moment.” He added later that he was looking for a country that matched his libertarian ideals to base his next startup. Stocks closed in the red Friday as investors weighed upbeat remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin about diplomatic discussions with Ukraine against a weaker-than-expected print on U.S. consumer sentiment. "And that set off kind of a battle royale for control of the platform that Durov eventually lost," said Nathalie Maréchal of the Washington advocacy group Ranking Digital Rights. Official government accounts have also spread fake fact checks. An official Twitter account for the Russia diplomatic mission in Geneva shared a fake debunking video claiming without evidence that "Western and Ukrainian media are creating thousands of fake news on Russia every day." The video, which has amassed almost 30,000 views, offered a "how-to" spot misinformation.
