Just days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Durov wrote that Telegram was "increasingly becoming a source of unverified information," and he worried about the app being used to "incite ethnic hatred." For example, WhatsApp restricted the number of times a user could forward something, and developed automated systems that detect and flag objectionable content. "This time we received the coordinates of enemy vehicles marked 'V' in Kyiv region," it added. "There are a lot of things that Telegram could have been doing this whole time. And they know exactly what they are and they've chosen not to do them. That's why I don't trust them," she said. False news often spreads via public groups, or chats, with potentially fatal effects.
