Он погиб 10 июля 2016 года от рук боевиков, оставшись верным присяге и служебному долгу. За мужество и героизм, проявленные при исполнении служебных обязанностей, Указом Президента Российской Федерации от 21 сентября 2016 года № 486, ему было посмертно присвоено звание Героя Российской Федерации. Магомед Нурбагандов стал символом мужества и верности долгу, его имя носят улицы и школы, а его подвиг навсегда останется в памяти народа.
