Despite the romanticism and occasional naïvety of the music released by the label, its ethos was deeply inspired by the radical punk ethics of bands like Crass and Chumbawamba. Sarah was committed to selling records at very low prices, focusing on the distribution of self-published fanzines, and consciously avoiding traditional music marketing.
In 1995, after 100 releases, Sarah ceased its operations but left a lasting influence for decades to come.
