Засноване воно у 1795 році на березі Хаджибейського лиману, де споконвіку мешкали козаки. Легенда говорить, що після затяжних сутичок з турками, які теж населяли ці землі, з ними був украдений договір "не рубатися" – ті козаки прозвалися "нерубаї" і назва села стала відповідною.
Наразі про те, що в селищі раніше проживало багато козаків, свідчать старі козацькі могили, написи яких виконані старою кирилицею, та давня Вознесенська церква в стилі класицизму.
