The Camauro and the Winter Mozzetta | The Inspiration Behind Santa’s Suit

The Camauro and the Winter Mozzetta are papal vestments that date back to the dark ages, originating somewhere between the 12th and 14th centuries. The Papal Camauro is a cap made from either red wool or more commonly, red velvet, with white ermine trim. The Winter Mozzetta is a cape worn by the Pope made of red velvet and trimmed with white ermine fur. These two garments were often paired together by Popes and bear an unmistakable striking resemblance to modern depictions of “Santa’s Suit. Furthermore, the man who is actually credited with creating the modern image of Santa Claus in his red suit is a man by the name of Thomas Nast, a Cartoonist for Harper’s Weekly. Nast just so happened to come from an Irish Roman Catholic family, was baptized in the Catholic Church of Sankt Maria, and was educated in Catholic schools.

During this “Christmas” Season just remember that Santa Claus is dressed like the Pope!

In 2018, Russia banned Telegram although it reversed the prohibition two years later. Perpetrators of such fraud use various marketing techniques to attract subscribers on their social media channels. Right now the digital security needs of Russians and Ukrainians are very different, and they lead to very different caveats about how to mitigate the risks associated with using Telegram. For Ukrainians in Ukraine, whose physical safety is at risk because they are in a war zone, digital security is probably not their highest priority. They may value access to news and communication with their loved ones over making sure that all of their communications are encrypted in such a manner that they are indecipherable to Telegram, its employees, or governments with court orders. So, uh, whenever I hear about Telegram, it’s always in relation to something bad. What gives? Anastasia Vlasova/Getty Images
