Несколько лет Штернберг работал ассистентом кинорежиссеров, затем получил возможность поставить собственный фильм - один из немногих голливудских инди-фильмов 1920-х годов. Сыгравший в нем главную роль Джордж Артур устроил показ в доме Чаплина. Фильм понравился Пикфорд и Фэрбенксу, "Юнайтед Артистс" приобрела права на прокат за 20 тысяч долларов. Чаплин предложил фон Штернбергу поставить драму о рыбаках с Эдной Первиэнс, Пикфорд попросила написать сценарий для ее следующего фильма.
