Дизайн машины был представлен гендиректором предприятия Дмитрием Семизоровым на выставке «ИННОПРОМ». Внешний облик стилизован под подвижной состав, выпускавшийся для города в 1950-60-е годы.

Двухсекционная модель 71-421 получила название «Петроградка», трехсекционная 71-431 - «Коломна». «Трамваи получили свои названия в честь исторических районов центра
Санкт-Петербурга, где они будут ездить», - указал Дмитрий Семизоров.

«Уралтрансмаш» должен поставить в Санкт-Петербург 54 низкопольных трамвая в таком дизайне: первые машины должны быть отгружены в мае 2023 года.
